The Oppo R17 Pro is the Guangdong OPPO Mobile Telecommunications Corp., Ltd, commonly referred to as OPPO company’s latest high end mobile phone that tries to balance the right amount of flagship features with an affordable price tag. Although Oppo is a big name in its home country of China, it’s looking to make a great impact in the developing countries like Nepal.
This Oppo‘s high end phone Oppo R17 Pro has 6.4-inch display with a waterdrop notch. And it has an in-display fingerprint scanner. The Oppo R17 Pro is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 SoC along with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. It has two 1850mAh batteries. You will get 50W SuperVOOC Flash charger in the box. This Oppo R17 Pro has a dual camera setup consisting of a 12-megapixel primary and a 20-megapixel secondary sensor. It also has 3D sensors which help it for 3D scanning. One important thing is that it has 25-megapixel selfie camera.
Oppo R17 Pro release date and price
The Oppo R17 Pro price in Nepal starts from Rs. 75,990 which gets you the configuration of 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, and is available to buy now Nepal.
While those specs are pretty decent as a base, one important thing to keep in mind is that there is no expandable storage on the Oppo R17 Pro which could be a limiting factor for some customers like you.
Oppo R17 Pro Review: Design and display
The Oppo R17 Pro is flagship and attractive smartphone with a large screen, minimum side bezels and a premium glass body.
This phone looks very much like OnePlus 6T with a water-drop shaped notch on top and a small chin at the bottom – and for good reason. Owner of the both Oppo and OnePlus are the same company and this isn’t the first time that we’ve seen two companies producing almost same looking devices. There is one very clear distinction between the two (other than the logos on the rear) and that’s the presence of three cameras on the back of the Oppo R17 Pro, versus just two rear snappers on the 6T.
Oppo R17 Pro is available in two colors – Emerald Green and Radiant Mist. The Emerald Green version is elegant and same to the color tone of Huawei used on the Mate 20 Pro. The overall design and structure of the Oppo R17 Pro is minimal and elegant and the part where screen and the frame meets is quite sharp along all edges and very noticeable if you like fidgeting with your phone in your hand.
At 183g, the Oppo R17 Pro is also a tad bit on the heavier side, though it makes us feel phone more premium and extra. Power button is located on the right side and volume on the left, while USB Type-C port stay at the bottom with the lone speaker and the dual-SIM tray. Oppo R17 Pro does not support microSD expansion and lacks a 3.5mm jack – with no adapter provided in the box. You will get a pair of USB-C earphones bundled in though, so all is not lost.
The back of the phone is plain and smooth with three cameras aligned vertically in the center. There is a camera bump however, but because it’s in the center, the phone doesn’t rock when placed on its back.
Oppo R17 Pro has a large 6.4-inch OLED screen with minimum bezels and a tiny notch which is similar to OnePlus 6T. It boasts a Full HD+ resolution (1080 x 2340), giving you a 402ppi pixel density ensuring text and images look sharp best. Watching videos on YouTube is clear and crisp, however you’ll have to make do with the black bars on either side when videos are viewed horizontally. You can zoom in slightly to make the video fullscreen, but that just means slight cropping will occur at the top and bottom.
Oppo R17 Pro got in-screen fingerprint scanner on the front giving the phone a nice clean look on the back, although it ts not as quick to recognize your fingerprint as those not built into displays. These does work though, and during our time so far with the R17 Pro it appears to be accurate too.
Oppo R17 Pro Review: Camera
The main important highlights of the OPPO R17 Pro is the camera setup. Which has three sensors on the back and it includes a dual-aperture 12MP camera very much like the Samsung Galaxy S9, so you cannot manually adjust the aperture. There’s also a 20MP f/2.6 sensor at 2X zoom that helps with portrait modes and than there is a TOF 3D camera which allows you to measure things like the length of an object and the surface area..
One of the features that OPPO wants to highlight with the dual aperture camera is night time photography that OPPO calls Ultra-Night mode. Using the f/1.5 aperture and software tricks, the OPPO R17 Pro lets you play with long exposure stabilization, noise cancellation, and a wider dynamic range.
And there is also 25MP front camera with AI beauty modes for selfie lovers. Effects allow you to slim your face and add makeup with live previews. For those who are selfie lovers, OPPO has always been innovative with front cameras for them.
Oppo R17 Pro Review: Battery life
It wouldn’t be an mobile phone of Oppo if it did not support ultra-fast charging, and the Oppo R17 Pro is no different. The R17 Pro comes bundled with the Super VOOC charger that charge the phone from 25% to 59%, in 10 minutes, which is very very fast.
The phone’s 3,700mAh battery is actually made up of two separate batteries, which supposedly helps in faster charge times than just in a single battery. The Oppo R17 Pro was more than able to hold out for nearly a hole day, which included everything from listening music to watching videos YouTube and of course long phone calls. When wireless charging does not supports, it’s a small price to pay when your phone can charge itself in a fraction of the time anyway.
Oppo R17 Pro Review: Specs and performance
The Oppo R17 Pro has the octa-core Snapdragon 710 processor which comes with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, along with Android version 8.1 and Color OS 5.2. This is little bit strange that a high-end Android cellphone in 2019 is still equipped with Android 8, but it’s not just about Android, it’s about Color OS also which is a custom skin by Oppo that makes the phone look a lot less like stock Android and more like iOS.
There’s nothing wrong with that – actually, many people pick a customized version of Android but Android fans won’t be keen on the lack of an app draw and the refusal to put any notification icons from apps in the notification bar at the top of the screen.
There is space to the left of the notch on the Oppo R17 Pro, but Oppo has opted to stick with colored circles on the app icons to denote something new is going on. Slightly the more alarming fact is that the Oppo R17 Pro has a non-flagship chipset, while its competition all boast top-end power under the hood. Daily usage of this phone isn’t particularly noticeable, but heavy lifting tasks take longer.
The phone also took a fraction of a second longer to switch between apps when we had more memory-intensive apps running in the background, so despite having adequate RAM, the R17 Pro’s slightly dated processor is the culprit here.
Oppo R17 Pro Review: Audio quality
The speaker of Oppo R17 Pro is at the bottom of the phone which is single loudspeaker, sound isn’t that great- while loud. Audio sounds very metallic, and music sounds average at best. It’s good for a quick conference call where you need more volume than nuances in the audio, but for trying to enjoy music or videos you’re better off plugging in headphones.
Call quality is very good, with no call dropouts or interruptions on either side.
Oppo R17 Pro Review: Final verdict
The Oppo R17 Pro is a premium phone that’s almost flagship material. It has a great camera, a amazing design and a large, gorgeous screen with a small notch. We didn’t notice any major performance issues either even though it’s not running the highest-end processor. The extra RAM probably makes up for the phone’s snappy performance.
But the price is on the higher side, for which you would expect a top-of-the-line processor for that price tag. For that much you can check out Samsung’s Galaxy Note 9, and for a little less than that there’s the Huawei P20 Pro and OnePlus 6T. While Oppo has created a good phone with the R17 Pro, there isn’t anything about it that demands the price it’s asking for.
