The iPhone 16 lineup is due in September of 2024, and rumors about this future product are already surfacing. it seems some rumors have been pushed forward into the 2024 cycle. While the largest 2023 model is the iPhone 15 Pro Max, Apple could shift its naming to "Ultra" to differentiate in 2024.

iPhone 16: Max, Pro, Ultra

Apple is expected to continue its two-tiered system of pro and standard devices — with a twist introduced in 2023. The standard iPhone and iPhone Plus should have near-identical features with different screen sizes, while the pro models won't.

Display

The iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Ultra could increase display size slightly and sport a new aspect ratio. Rumors from DSCC Ross Young state they would have a 6.27-inch and 6.86-inch display, respectively, with a 16.6:9 aspect ratio. The standard iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus would retain identical display sizes to the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus. The Dynamic Island cutouts would also remain the same, but they could gain an LTPO backplane for ProMotion support.

iPhone 16 camera: the iPhone 16 family will be scoring few but sensible camera upgrades that will allow it to provide better competition to the rivaling top-tier Android devices. The iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus will retain the dual-camera setup with the 48MP main camera. The iPhone 16 Pro could potentially get the iPhone 15 Pro Max's 5X tetraprism-powered telephoto camera. Finally, the iPhone 16 Pro Max could score a 12.5X optical zoom camera, though that rumor is not very believable. Both the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max might get new 48MP ultra wide-angle cameras.

The iPhone 16 will most certainly retain the same general setup that debuted with the iPhone 15: a 48MP wide-angle camera with a 12MP ultra-wide sidekick camera. By default, the iPhone 15 takes 24MP photos, so the iPhone 16 will surely do that as well. Thanks to the larger sensor, the iPhone 15 allows its users to capture 2X photos with lossless image quality by cropping the camera sensor, and the iPhone 16 will do that, too.

Battery

Rumors suggest the iPhone 16 Pro models will use stacked battery technology, which can result in higher capacity and a longer lifespan. Stacked batteries are common in electric vehicles and medical devices, but are an emerging technology for smartphones.

The stacked battery could come alongside faster 40W wired charging and 20W MagSafe charging. An image of the alleged iPhone 16 Pro battery leaked in November with a new design, updated connector, and 3355mAh capacity.

USB-C Port

Apple will transition to USB-C technology with the iPhone 15 lineup, and it's also expected to be used for the iPhone 16 models.
